The Issues

Railway transport in Europe is a fast evolving industry in the grip of fundamental and far-reaching regulatory change. The ongoing creation of a single railway system for its Member States, essentially to function without technical or operational barriers, represents a colossal legislative undertaking by the European Union.

The resulting European Standards or Euronorms designed to accomplish this vision have two primary objectives; the first to provide free-flow of rail transport across Europe, and the second critically, to promote technical interoperability, with the most significant changes seen in the already complex and regionally diverse arena of fire protection for passenger vehicles.

The concern for rail operators and manufacturers centres around compliance with the EU 45545 set of standards governing fire protection for railway vehicles. The 4th annual Fire Protection of Rolling Stock conference will address the issues that the industry is facing including examining when and how standards will be harmonised and assessing the various fire protection strategies that operators are adopting to outlining current modelling and testing methods, new fire-retardant materials, the impact of rolling stock fire in tunnels, and the financial implication and management for securing compliance.
